Bragadiru Palace
147-153 Calea Rahovei, Bucharest
The story of the Bragadiru Palace architectural complex has its origins in the early 1900s. Thus, the Palace building was presented for the first time on the geographical plan made by the Geographical Institute of the Army during 1895-1899 and in 1911. The entire domain bears the name of its founder, Dumitru Marinescu Bragadiru. He started the construction of the “Colossus”, as the building was known in its beginnings, around 1905. Conceived as a Palace of Culture, this building respects an old tradition of breweries, namely, to have in the immediate vicinity a place of recreation for people who worked in this industry.
The Bragadiru Palace was built according to the plans designed by the Austrian architect Anton Shuckerl, in 1894. It is an impressive construction, in terms of size, architecture and decorations, with special attention to detail. The summer garden and terrace harmoniously complement this building with eclectic architecture, with Norman-style spiral staircases, stucco, inset statues, Venetian mirrors, and Victorian-style balconies. The Bragadiru Palace remains to this day one of the most imposing buildings of the old Bucharest.
